Preventing Drink Spiking Before It Happens
Drink spiking remains one of the most concerning issues facing students, venues and event organisers today.
While awareness campaigns are important, prevention is equally important.
That was the focus of BevGARDien®’s recent activation at Keele University’s Woodstoke Summer Festival 2026, where we partnered with student welfare teams and hospitality staff to demonstrate practical measures that can help reduce opportunities for drink tampering in busy nightlife environments.
Supported by NV® Absinthe and La Fée®, the activation showed how brands, venues and student organisations can work together to promote safer social experiences without detracting from the enjoyment of an event.
Moving the Conversation Forward
For many years, discussions around drink spiking have understandably focused on what happens after an incident occurs.
However, students, universities and venue operators are increasingly recognising the value of preventative approaches.
Questions we heard repeatedly throughout the festival included:
- How can students better protect their drinks?
- What practical steps can venues take?
- How can welfare teams support safer nights out?
- What role can suppliers and drinks brands play?
These are exactly the conversations BevGARDien® was designed to support.
What is BevGARDien®?
BevGARDien® is an eco-conscious drinks cover designed to help reduce opportunities for drink tampering.
Manufactured using food-contact compliant materials, each device provides a simple physical barrier while still allowing normal consumption of a drink.
Designed for use across glasses, cups, bottles and cans, BevGARDien® has been developed to support:
- Universities and Students’ Unions
- Bars and Nightclubs
- Festivals and Live Events
- Hospitality Operators
- Student Welfare Teams
- Safer Nightlife Initiatives
Importantly, the aim is not to replace awareness, training or responsible venue management, but to add another practical layer of protection.
Keele University: A Positive Response
Throughout the weekend, hundreds of students visited the NV® Bus and engaged with demonstrations of the BevGARDien® system.
The response was overwhelmingly positive.
Many students commented that they had never previously seen a simple, affordable product specifically designed to help protect drinks during a night out.
Equally encouraging was the engagement from venue staff and welfare teams, who recognised the value of combining education with practical solutions.
Industry Support Matters
One of the most powerful aspects of the Keele activation was the support provided by NV® Absinthe and La Fée®.
As long-standing drinks brands, we believe the hospitality industry has a responsibility to help create environments where customers feel safe and supported.
The goal is simple:
Great nights out should also be safer nights out.
By supporting initiatives such as BevGARDien®, brands can help raise awareness, encourage conversation and contribute to positive change across the sector.
Looking Ahead
Following Keele, BevGARDien® will continue its university engagement programme with upcoming events including:
- Royal Holloway Summer Ball
- Harper Adams Summer Ball
- Additional Students’ Union and university events across the UK
As awareness grows and new legislation continues to highlight the seriousness of drink spiking, we believe prevention, education and collaboration will remain essential.
The conversation is changing.
From reacting after incidents occur…
…to helping prevent them before they happen.
